‘Scared Rabbits run faster’ – the composition

(using an old Persian melody ‚Mutarb ba Kosh’ for the Golden Lion)

It felt so evident to picture a symphonic scenery, frame and indication for the rhythm and
atmospheres of the play, within which the children could unfold their creative and playful
                 freedom!

Harp and violins for the apple tree scene, piccolo flute for the little hare, and the trombone
for the Golden Lion – Martin, Margrit’s partner, plays the trombone, and so he could support
the lions’ authority ‘live and acoustically’!

Naturally it was not possible to write the composition, find a small orchestra and to perform
the music live – the time was much too short; so I had no other choice than to switch on the
computer and tempt the adventure with the FINALE music program. So the result remains a
little meagre (also the recording on the CD which you will find in this book) until maybe, one
day, it will be played by a real orchestra – who knows!

In the second part of this book you will find the score of this composition – parts are
available at request – and if a conductor could be found who would be ready to work and
refine the composition, together with an orchestra – I would happily share the work and
would not shy back to give the music a deeper and more beautiful expression!

Structure and concept of the musical scenery

1st scene: Meadow, blue sky, apple tree, hare ruminating on his thoughts – plop!

                 Vivace R = 120:

Harp and strings depict the scene, until finally the apple falls.

2nd scene: Hare starts running… stops, all join in…

                 Presto R = 160:

The contrabass illustrates the rising fear in the hare, and it starts running, accompanied by
percussion – the piccolo imitates the waveͲlike, zigzagging gallop of the hare in cycles of
eight beats, which repeat during the entire race, the fast fourͲbeat creates a demanding
atmosphere, but it should at the same time, despite of the rather serious background, stay
as light as to give the children the chance to enjoy the running.

Bar 37 to 41 the first flute plays the question to its brother hare: „brother, brother, why are
you running?“ This melody repeats in the same form with all animals, only the first time the
hare answers, all other animals join in without further dialogue, there is only the question of
each animal: “What is the matter, why are you running?”

The other instruments are only defined insofar as the first and second flute play hare two
and three and – evidently – the Tuba plays the voice of the elephant who at the end only
                 hesitatingly joins the collective hectic.
