And while the Buddha was seated
and all listened to him,

he told these stories.

“My children”, he said, “it is not the first time

that I come to you as your Buddha.
Many times I have come before;

sometimes as a child among other children,

sometimes among animals as one of them,
sometimes in nature, between the flowers,

and I loved them as I love you now;
without your knowing it, I have made a path for you.

So your Buddha lived in the past
as a monkey among the monkeys,

as a deer among the deer,
and I was their head and guide”.
